An adventure in the Monkey Island mould
Despite its anachronistic method of gameplay - a first-person point 'n' click adventure game in the Monkey Island mould - Return To Mysterious Island is a contemporary offering that's thankfully better to play than it appears on paper.
First up, it looks and sounds fantastic, with lush backdrops of the destination you find yourself washed up on. Second, it has a fun narrative (based on an old Jules Verne yarn) underpinning it all. And third, intriguing puzzles are woven into the story, often with multiple solutions, which is a refreshing touch for a traditionally linear and prohibitive genre.
However, it's not exactly revolutionary and, unsurprisingly, suffers from the adventure-game gripe of random guessing at certain junctures - the 'wing and a prayer' approach is not that gratifying.
