Review: LG Flatron L1732P LCD monitor

Why would you pay nearly £200 for a 17in LCD monitor? Try these features

Those looking to replace an aging CRT monitor with a new LCD model should take a look at LG’s Flatron L1732P.

It may be a 17in model but has some worthwhile extras which should make it a good choice.

Before looking at these, though, we should start with its picture quality; it's very good, with a comfortable, natural reproduction of colour which does as well with vivid primaries as it does with quieter pastels.

The display is rated with the response time of 4 milliseconds (ms), which is fast for an LCD panel and had no problems following the action in high-energy games or action movies.

Having said that, we’ve seen little problem with LCD monitors rated as high as 12ms and, unless you're a pro-gamer, you're unlikely to notice the difference. For most people, any LCD offering 12ms, 8ms or 4ms should be free of ghosting.

Monitor controls are a series of push buttons under the bottom-right edge of the screen and provide the usual range of adjustments, including an auto-setup feature for when connecting via the monitor’s analogue input. It has a digital DVI input too.

So, here's a well-designed LCD monitor with good controls and picture quality. The next requirement is flexibility so that it can be positioned exactly where needed.

The L1732P sits on a counterbalanced pedestal stand, allowing it to be pushed up and down. It can also be tilted backwards and forwards and from side to side.

The only remaining adjustment is rotation and LG has included a full copy of Pivot Pro, a utility that automatically adjusts the display orientation from landscape to portrait when the screen is rotated through 90 degrees.

This is of particular benefit when doing word processing, desktop publishing or web design that all use long, thin documents.

Although there are much cheaper 17in LCD displays around, the LG Flatron L1732P is a truly versatile model and worth that little bit extra.
