Shuttle XS35

A tiny desktop computer, but it comes without Windows

shuttle-xs35

Shuttle’s XS35 is a tiny desktop PC. Only a few years ago we reviewed similarly sized products that contained just a DVD writer: the XS35 has one of these, but the box also packs in an Atom processor of the type found in netbook computers, 2GB of memory and a 320GB hard disk.

All this is packed into a smartly designed box measuring just less than 4x17x26cm, which can sit on a desk or stand upright – a screw-on stand is included. The front holds the optical disc drawer, one USB port and a memory card reader, while on the back there are four more USB sockets, a network socket, speaker and microphone sockets and a VGA socket for the a monitor. Wireless networking is also included.

Unlike the similarly small Zotac Zbox we reviewed recently, the XS35 won’t have you reaching for a screwdriver: this one comes with all the parts included. It doesn’t, however, include Windows, so you’ll need to budget for a copy and spend time installing it.

With Windows installed, it runs well – certainly well enough for everyday computer tasks such as office work and internet use. The very best quality high-definition videos stuttered slightly, though, so we’d recommend something with a better graphics chip for use as a media PC.

There’s much to like about the XS35: it’s small, quiet, nicely designed for a tiny PC, works well and doesn’t require assembly.

On the other hand, it’s disappointing that there’s no copy of Windows installed, as this increases the price and time taken to set it up, and the lack of a digital monitor connection is a shame.

If you have a spare copy of Windows it might be tempting, but otherwise there are better small PCs available.
