Silent Hunter 3

Given that most of them never returned to their homeland, the idea of skippering a World War II-era German U-boat and facing the near inevitability of death seems a dire prospect. But these slender odds of survival are what make Silent Hunter 3 such a gripping game.

Thankfully, this isn't your average military simulator. It's comprehensive and accurate for sure, but it's also beautiful to look at and fantastic to play. Immediately, the game's graphics will impress, with stunning recreations of the inside of the boat and the outside world.

It's also uncluttered and the interface is intuitive, allowing you to command your boat with ease. This is vital as there are some chaotic battles to fight.

In addition, the audio effects throughout are great, atmospherically recreating the never-ceasing tension.

You look after your submarine by issuing commands to your men, although you can take personal control of any one area if you so wish.

There is some light role-playing involved as well, as your crew must be managed successfully to ensure that morale is maintained, which adds another angle to the game.
