Samsung VP-D130

A palmcorder offering good picture quality and easy-to-use menus.

Digital camcorders can be roughly split into two design categories: horizontal and upright. Models in the latter category, also known as palmcorders, have proved to be very popular in recent years, since the shape often means considerable size reductions.

If, however, you're making such aesthetic considerations, then it's unlikely that you will ever choose the Samsung VP-D130. Its squared corners and boxy shape looks uncomfortably old-fashioned, especially when compared to models like the Canon MV5. At the same time, the camcorder's dimensions (54 x 114 x 104mm) make it just that little bit too big to carry in a pocket or handbag.

You would also expect a camera of this price to make some provisions for stills photographers, but there are very few here. You can certainly take still shots, but only at standard DV resolution, which is no competition for modern megapixel digital cameras. Even then you can only save your photos to tape, since there is no memory card slot and transfer to PC is awkward.

In terms of performance and operation, however, the VP-D130 goes some way to making up for its shortcomings, with good picture quality and easy-to-use menus. It also has an above-average 12x optical zoom, which will appeal to people who want a longer reach than the standard 10x zoom that comes with most mid-range DV cams.
