Review: Medion P7300D desktop computer

This desktop offers performance on a budget

medion-akoya-p7300d

The Akoya P7300D desktop computer, available from Aldi shops, is something of a powerhouse.

For instance, it uses an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 processor, which is one of the fastest you're likely to find in the shops without paying through the nose. The 'Quad' in the name indicates that it has four separate processing units (the standard processor has one, and a dual-core processor has two).

That means it can do four tasks at once, which doesn't quite equate to a four-fold increase in speed but it will mean that some things, such as picture and video editing, and games, will go a lot faster than they would otherwise.

The computer comes with 4GB of memory, which is again as much as you're likely to find in any current computer, and the same goes for the one-terabyte hard disk, providing storage for documents, music, video and everything else. One terabyte is equal to 1,000GB, which is more than enough for even a very large collection of music and video.

In order to make the best use of all that power, the computer comes with the 64-bit version of Windows Vista, which allows the computer to properly use the resources at its disposal. The reason it's not usually found on home computers is that, historically, it has been hard to get programs and devices to work with it (the standard 32-bit version of Vista is much more widely compatible).

It's true that some software and hardware still won't work with 64-bit Vista, but the number of such problems is decreasing. Most new releases will work fine, but if you are upgrading and you have old products that you want to use on the new PC, check online to make sure they'll work first.

Graphics are provided by an Nvidia Geforce 9600GT graphics card with 512MB of its own memory, which will give pretty good performance in recently released games even at high detail levels. In general, performance was impressive for all tasks.

There's also a TV tuner that can receive standard or Freeview broadcasts, and even satellite broadcasts if you have the appropriate kit in your house. Media Center software, which comes with Vista, allows the PC to be used as a video recorder. The graphics card has an HDMI output that allows it to be connected to newer flat-screen televisions for the best-quality picture.

In addition to the DVD writer there is a memory card reader, eight USB ports, Firewire, wired and wireless network connections, serial port, plenty of sound and video connections (some hidden behind a faceplate on the front panel).

An average keyboard and wireless mouse are supplied, as is a remote control for the aforementioned Media Center. The only thing missing is a monitor – as this is a base unit, you'll need to add your own or plug it into a television.

The Akoya P7300D is on sale from 27 November at Aldi shops but quantities may be limited. At £500 it is excellent value for those who are looking for more power than they'll get from the standard desktop computer.

Good points Loads of power; good games performance; versatile TV tuner; loads of storage space

Bad points Case is on the large side; not everyone will use all the power; no monitor

Did YOU get one? Thought not...

So, did anyone actually manage to pick 'one' of these up? I didn't...the queue was 10 deep when I got to the pathetic, dirty store at 9 o'clock. It's 10 miles from me, too! First 4 people got one, 'bye-bye' the rest of you. Aldi can kiss any chance of me shopping there again, Tesco's is closer and THEY ahve machines, and I never again will advise people of the quality of the Medion machine - assuming you can actually get one!? I'll just tell a wee fib. Or 2. And you said BUY IT? Pointless waste of time, advertising and money!

Vista

Hi Just bought this PC, and it comes with vista 32 loaded, but also vista 64 in the box. I've checked and the motherboard seems to be a 32 bit. Should I install the 64 version that is mentioned in the review ?

This article is out of date

This PC went on sale back in March 2008(as the link confirms) and no longer is available. I think this article is related to the Medion Laptop which has just gone on sale.

Medion at Aldi

It is a nonsense to waste space reviewing this machine when each store only received 3 or 4 PCs which were sold out in minutes. Aldi do themselves no favours with this stupid marketing and Computeractive should not encourage them

Reserve judgement for now

I was one of the 'lucky' ones to get this machine, apparently there were many people queueing for this machine but only a couple were available in store. Anyway. Got the BSOD 3 times during initial setup but as everything seemed to work eventually I thought no more about it. A couple of days ago, programmes were refusing to run, a new window would open but just remain blank yet the PC was showing it was busy. OK, no problems. I can reset the machine to factory settings (as I did on my previous Medion many times)- but no. The best I can do is to install Vista. So, I have Vista but none of the other programmes that come pre-loaded. Now awaiting a reply from the Medion helpdesk. On top of all this, I also discover my 2 year old Medion scanner won't work under Vista & Medion say they have no plans to release new drivers - way to go Medion. It's a powerful machine alright but not much good if I can't use half of the stuff in there because I don't have the software for it. One other downside - you only get a 60 day trial of Office, I've just paid all this money for a PC & I can't even write a letter - time to start seriously thinking about some of those free programmes I keep reading about in Computeractive, Microsoft already have too much money.

Why no comment?

I know you just delete all your subscribers e-mails/comments but computeractive has messed up BIG TIME here. I have sent, along with many others, comments on the Medion Akoya P7300's shortage of supply! To add insult to injury, look at your item in the soon to be published issue 282! "In Brief" section, "Medion Gaming pc in Aldi stores" I would suggest that you take note of your reader's/subscribers interests and issue a comment regarding the complete unavailability of this product since 9.15am on the launch day (27th Nov 2008).

Akoya P7300D

I bought the above system in November 2008 but had a small problem with the DVD/CD drive it turned out to be a nightmare, They sent a Courier/Van driver to do a repair on my system and when he got here I had to show him how to fit it, After it was fitted he found it was broken, That happened on two occasions with the same man, I am a computer Technician and I thought the system was brilliant but the aftersales is a joke, They use there courier service van drivers to do the repairs and when I questioned them about it they thought it was fine and said they where fully trained, The man that came here told me he had had half an hours training with a cup of tea and a biscuit, I'm still waiting for a replacment drive from last year what does that tell you, I find it a shame that this company have such a good product and at the rightprice but terrible aftersales service it has but me right off them, The only thing I can say id that ALDI the shop I bought it from have been brilliant and offered me a full cash refund because of the messing about from Medion U.K.
