LaCie Pocket Drive 80Gb

A handy external hard disk from Lacie.

External hard disks are really handy, especially if you're always moving large files between computers. LaCie's latest Pocket Drive is no exception with its thumping 80Gb storage capacity.

Two versions of the drive are now available. There's a USB 2 model, or for an extra £25, you can get the 'U&I' version, which has both USB and FireWire interfaces. Both connections provide comparable data transfer speeds of around 25Mbit/s. However, the advantage of using FireWire is that the Pocket Drive can draw its power supply from the FireWire interface.

That means you can leave the power supply unit and cable behind when on the move, simplifying things and saving space.

Miniaturisation seems to be the key here. Both versions are tiny, specified to the same size and weight, similar in size to a cheque book and weighing less than a pound. The toughened rubber casing is really sturdy too, so tough in fact it'll survive a few hefty knocks while bouncing around in a briefcase or jiggled in a backpack when you're out on the road.
