Waitec Action 8

As its name suggests, the Action 8 is a recordable DVD drive that can write DVDs at 8-speed. This is currently the fastest write speed and equates to around an hour to produce a full 4.7Gb DVD.

It's a dual-format drive that supports both plus and minus DVD formats. DVD+R can be written at the maximum speed, DVD-R at four speed, while DVD+RW and DVD-RW offer 4-speed and 2-speed writing respectively. What's important, though, is that you don't have to worry about choosing the right DVD media, it will write to anything bar DVD-RAM.

As well as supporting DVD media it can also create a full 700Mb CD-R in two minutes and a CD-RW in just over three. Waitec's SafeLink technology also helps eliminate buffer under-runs, which are the main cause of failed discs.

Waitec has included Nero Suite 3, which includes the proprietary DVD/CD-writing software plus a label-design kit. There's also a basic data back-up program for archiving valuable files and documents.

Of course, the Action 8 is a DVD player and to this end, Waitec includes the excellent Nero Showtime software, which supports Dolby Digital surround sound.

You can keep the drive up to date by using the online firmware updates and everything is backed by a two-year warranty.
