Medion Akoya P5315 D

Power and expandability in a small desktop case

Medion Akoya P5315 D

The P5315 D doesn't come with a screen, but it's a powerful computer

This Medion desktop is an Aldi special, available in the supermarket's shops from Sunday February 6. It's a squat ‘tower' case that should easily fit under most desks, and being what's called a ‘base unit' it comes with keyboard and mouse but not a monitor.

Like all recent Medion desktop computers we have seen, the top of the case has a moulded fitting for a special Medion external hard disk, which is available separately. However, standard USB hard disks are so widely available that the moulded fitting is not much of an advantage.

The main processor inside the computer is an AMD Athlon II X4 640 quad-core chip, one of the fastest currently available. It's combined with 4GB of memory and an ATI Radeon HD 6450 graphics card with 512MB of its own memory. Together those components provide a powerful base for all kinds of computing tasks including simple web browsing, editing high-definition video and playing recent games at high-quality levels. Our DVD-copying test is a realistic representation of raw computing power and this computer chewed through it fairly easily, though only about half as quickly as the latest Intel processors we've reviewed.

A 1TB (1,000GB) main hard disk is more than enough for storage of all but the largest collections of documents, pictures, music and video, and there is a DVD drive mounted in the front panel that will read and create all CDs and DVDs, but not the more recent Blu-ray movie discs.

Also on the front panel there is a spare bay so you can add a Blu-ray drive if you wish, a memory card reader, headphone and microphone sockets and two USB ports. Four more USB 2 and USB 3 ports are mounted on the rear panel along with surround sound and optical sound connections and keyboard and mouse sockets. It can connect to both wired and wireless networks. The graphics card has DVI, VGA and HDMI sockets for attaching it to any kind of monitor or flat-panel television set.

It's supplied with Windows 7 Home Premium and some decent software such as Office 2010 Starter, a word processor and spreadsheet combination. It also comes with Cyberlink programs for playing and working with DVDs and Corel Draw Essentials 4 for drawing and painting. Some of the other software isn't so useful: the free Google Chrome browser is fine, but the trial anti-virus program is of little use, and neither are the links to Aldi services. Fortunately these can be removed easily. The supplied keyboard and mouse are fine but not especially comfortable.

We have seen quicker processors more recently (see above) but given the price tag on this model and its combination of impressive processor, graphics card and memory, it's excellent value.

TV tuner card?

I have a Medion MD 8800 at the momemnt, running Windows XP. I quite like the TV tuner card feature on this desktop. I'm looking to upgrade to Windows 7. Is the Medion Akoya P5315 D, the equivalent machine and does it have a TV tuner card?

Great!

Doesn't look like it has the tuner. I also have an MD8800, but have already upgraded it with a silent graphics card and SSD. You could easily add a tuner card though and remote, so this looks a bargain.

Thanks for the review. I'm trying to find out if this has Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit or 64bit installed?

Dual Monitor

I would like to confirm that this PC supports dual monitors (1 via the white (DVI) and 1 via the blue (VGA) cable). Thanks.

Expansion potential?

Tidy little unit, nice and quiet. The case is highlighted with a rather bright blue glow though - I find that rather tacky and it would be intrusive if you want it hooked up to the TV. There doesn't seem to be an option to turn off the LED that produces it - comments on the web mention cutting the lead at the motherboard, which might invalidate the 3-year warranty. This article mentions that it has 'good expansion potential' but there are no free PCI slots on the motherboard so if you want to add a tuner it will have to be a USB one.

No stock

My local store had 4 in & all sold within 10 mins of store opening. I was in London for the weekend & no Aldis for 12 miles I was the same all over the country-massive hype in the press but as always with Aldi-less than poor stock levels.

upgrade

brought one, upgraded graphics card to a geforce gt240 and it's amazing! only has 350w psu and gt240 only requires 300w.so for £69 extra i have turned mine into a great gaming pc.

this item is not available anywhere

graphics card

In the article it says you can play modern games at high levels, no you can't. It's a very basic gpu, if you want this pc for games you need to upgrade graphics card. Do some research as i said in previous post it only has a 350w psu so your quite limited, most modern graphics cards need over 400w.

Article was a little misleading

The article says that computer has great expansion potential but it doesn't as there are no free expansion slots and both memoryslots are populated { what is the maximum memory supported? as I cannot find any information on the motherboard} Overall it is a very good system for general use but as has already been said not a great gaming machine.

expansion potential limited

This is misleading, i bought one of these and it is a basic but quick machine and great for photoshop, however, when looking to add RAM both expansion slots are occupied, and after scouring the web it appears 4gb RAM is the maximum supported memory. This is also not a gaming machine, the graphics card is worth about £25 - £30
