Video editing gets a power boost
Those who prefer a hands-on approach will find a vast array of transitions and special effects to use
Adobe Premiere Elements might be the best-known name when it comes to home video editing, but Cyberlink has got one over its rival by releasing a version that takes full advantage of 64-bit computers.
To take full advantage you will need a PC with a 64-bit processor (most PCs bought in the past few years will have one) and a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or Vista. To check, click Start, right-click Computer and select Properties, and 32-bit or 64-bit will be listed under System Type. If it's a 32-bit computer the new version will still work, but it won't be as fast.
How much of an effect this has ultimately depends on the computer, but we certainly noticed a performance boost on our 64-bit test computer, with the smooth previewing of high-definition video clips being particularly impressive and something with which most video-editors struggle. It also had no problem previewing multiple clips simultaneously.
Aside from the new 64-bit support, there's not a lot that's new. Powerdirector's interface is well-designed and doesn't take long to get used to, and many of the program's features have been carried over from the previous version.
The Magic Movie Wizard, for example, will quickly turn a folder full of video clips into movie complete with background audio and transitions. Although handy, the finished movie will be littered with overbearing effects, so you will probably need to spend time removing some of them.
Those who prefer a more hands-on approach will find a vast array of transitions and effects from which to choose, and if you want to get really creative, movies can now be produced with up to 100 video and audio tracks. Another interesting new feature is the program's ability to smoothly slow down footage by inserting additional frames.
A separate Wave Editor application is included for editing sound clips. High-definition video, including Blu-ray, is also fully supported, while clips can be uploaded directly to Facebook or Youtube.
Fast, smooth and powerful, Powerdirector 9 Ultra64 is a great choice if you have a relatively powerful 64-bit computer.
However, if it has less than 4GB of memory or a 32-bit processor, the performance boost will be less noticeable.

Our verdict
Easy to use and packed with features, but the benefits of 64-bit support require a powerful computer
Makes use of 64-bit processors; huge range of editing tools; advanced audio-editing application included
Performance boost requires a powerful computer; few new features aside from 64-bit support; Magic Movie Wizard overzealous in applying effects
