Crysis 2 action game review

Suit up for a second time with this sci-fi shooter sequel

Crysis 2

Crysis 2 is a first-person shooter (FPS) game that blends an intriguing science-fiction plot with an unusually tactical take on the genre.

Gone is the leafy jungle setting of the 2007 original - instead the action is relocated to the streets, high-rises and subways of New York.

Events take place some time in the near future, where an alien infestation has rained devastation down upon the Big Apple. Citizens have either been evacuated or are suffering from a mystery virus; the city is crawling with both extra terrestrials and military troops.

Your character, known as Alcatraz, is a marine who finds himself imbued with extraordinary powers thanks to a special item of clothing called the ‘Nanosuit', which lets you jump higher, run faster, boost your resistance to enemy fire and even - for brief periods - turn invisible. Your mission (at least to begin with) is to rescue a renowned scientist, but your suit has made you a target for both the soldiers and the aliens.

What distinguishes Crysis 2 from other similar titles are its visuals and its gameplay. The game's graphics are jaw-dropping, particularly during the many big action set-pieces that pepper proceedings. Of course, you'll need a powerful PC, with a modern graphics card, to run the game (click here for details).

We like the way Crysis 2 allows you the freedom to plan your strategy. Unlike many games of its type, which tend to funnel you down a set path as you shoot wave upon wave of enemies, Crysis 2's single-player campaign generally provides you with several different options in any given situation and it's up to you which approach you take. Upgrading your suit and customising weaponry provide further tactical layers.

If you like shooters, then Crysis 2 should definitely be on your wishlist. It's well-paced, thoughtfully constructed and visually stunning. A rousing musical score and great multiplayer options flesh out this enjoyable - if somewhat technically demanding - blockbuster sequel.
