Soundscience QSB speakers

The Soundscience QSB speakers are well-designed

Although the built-in speakers in laptops are getting better, they're still not great, so that there is a large market for replacements.

Soundscience's Qsb speakers are one such stand-in: two 15w speakers measuring 8.5cm on each side, which connect to each other using standard ‘phono' leads, all powered from the computer's USB port.

The speakers' metal grilles and high-gloss finish make them discreetly attractive. The whole package, including both cables, comes in a rugged and durable rubberized case, making it ideal for travelling.

The quality of the audio was good – clear, bright and defined – but there was notable and unpleasant distortion when we played bass-heavy dance styles at high volume.

Keeping the volume below maximum output – as is good practice when using any speaker or amplifier – produced the best results.

The maximum volume is relatively low in any case, so the set won't do in the garden for a summer barbecue, but performed well at a desk or while traveling.

The £90 price tag might seem high for a pair of small speakers but this kit frees the user from the mains power point, making it a great choice for people who need good sound on the road.
