Take to the streets and behead the undead
The maps in the Zombie Driver game provided tight turns and demanded a balance between speed, steering and firing
Zombie Driver is clearly inspired by the classic Carmageddon – the player controls a series of vehicles from taxis to supercars and attempts to clear the surrounding area of zombies, mostly by running them over.
This earns you cash that can be used to collect and upgrade weapons, which appear on the map after a certain amount of cash has been stockpiled. These include a limited-range flamethrower, a machine gun and rocket launcher.
There's some gore on display but the birds-eye view the player sees from just behind the vehicle limits any detail, although there's a satisfying crunch as your car plows into groups of zombies.
The maps provided tight turns and demanded a balance between speed, steering and firing in settings such as urban neighbourhoods and dockyards, though it put a real strain on the hand muscles when we used the keyboard to control the vehicle.
The pace of the game is frantic, with scores of zombies, infected animals and mutants relentlessly pursuing your car and trying to inflict damage. Sustain enough and your car explodes, although you can drive over first-aid points to make repairs.
The story mode poses a series of short missions that require the player to rescue survivors, while separate mini-games focus on racing or maximising body counts.
The 17 story missions provide longevity and the combo moves offer fun new ways to take down the horde. Zombie Driver provides plenty of fast-paced thrills but lacks the humour of games such as Carmageddon or the Grand Theft Auto series, and the hectic gameplay can become same-y and tiresome.
Despite that, at £7 (available online from Steam) it's not bad value if this sounds like your sort of game.
