Synology Diskstation DS411j network hard disk

A powerful network hard disk enclosure for advanced users

Synology Diskstation DS411j

Synology only sells empty enclosures, although some stores sell the DS411j with hard disks

Network hard disks, also called network-attached storage (Nas) devices, are a popular way to share files over a home network without the hassle of setting up shared folders on each PC.

More expensive multiple-disk models such as the Synology Disktation DS411j offer extra features such as increased data protection and media streaming.

Synology only sells empty enclosures, although some stores sell the DS411j with hard disks already installed (we found a 4TB model on Amazon for £505, for example). The DS411j accepts four desktop or notebook hard disks of up to 3TB each, but if you plan on adding your own you should first check compatibility on Synology's website.

Fitting drives requires removing the case, but only a screwdriver is needed. The case was quite chunky, with a distracting large blue light on the power switch. It ran quietly, but wasn't silent as there are two fans at the back.

Software setup was a bit trickier, as the installation guide missed out a vital step where you have to locate a setup file on the CD. The setup wizard didn't help with this, and we only found the file by accident. But once we had found it, the rest of the process was quick and simple, with the software guiding us through the procedure. It can automatically decide how to format the hard disks for duplication, depending on how many disks are installed.

The capabilities of the DS411j are advanced – it uses the same software as the DS201j model already reviewed. It runs in a web browser and looks like a mini-Windows desktop, with folders and icons for the various settings and features.

You can use it just for simple file sharing, or enable the Media Server for streaming media, Photo Station for viewing photos and many more advanced tools. You can even view and play your files using free smartphone apps. It also comes with PC backup software.

The Synology DS411j has many excellent features, but you end up paying a lot for these compared with simpler devices. If you just want shared folders and backup, a cheaper device will be much better value.
