A small but high-quality snapshot camera
The Sony’s body is much smaller than that of a digital SLR
The Sony NEX-C3 is what's known as a Compact System Camera – because its lens is interchangeable, you're buying into the Sony NEX ‘system' when you buy this model.
It has a larger image sensor than most small cameras – it's the same size as one used in most SLR models which along with the higher-quality lenses makes for better image quality than most pocket models.
The NEX-C3's body is much smaller than an SLR's: remove the lens and you can fit it into a pocket. The kit we reviewed came with an 18-55mm zoom lens.
In fact, at 33mm thick and weighing 225g the NEX-C3 is really rather compact, though this means there isn't a built-in flash: the supplied flash unit clips onto the top.
The camera has a 16-megapixel resolution and a new array of digital effects, including the ability to blur the background of a portrait to make your subject stand out. Battery life was good, with 400 shots from a full charge.
Quality of still images was very high, with vivid colour and good detail. The NEX-C3 can shoot video too, but unlike more expensive models in the NEX range, not at the ‘full' high-definition resolution of 1080p, instead working at the lower 720p.
However, video recordings looked great and the stereo microphones on the camera's front made the audio sound good. As with many modern cameras there's a dedicated video-record button at the back, so no need to mess around in settings to switch between photos and video.
There's no viewfinder so photos and videos must be composed and reviewed using the rear 3in widescreen display, which has the ability to tilt up or down.
This meant that we were able to adjust it and still see the screen even when holding the camera at arm's length, or placing it on the floor for more dynamic shots, as well as avoiding glare from the sun.
You can pick up an SLR for this price, but the NEX-C3 is an impressive, high-quality compact camera that allows users to be flexible when choosing lenses and accessories, and is small enough to carry around easily.

Our verdict
Better resolution and battery life than its NEX-3 predecessor, but more of a consolidation than a massive leap forward
Small body size (though supplied lens adds bulk); useful tilting screen; built-in digital effects filters are fun and easy to use
As expensive as an entry-level SLR; no built-in flash
