Fujitsu Stylistic Q550 Slate PC tablet computer

Another baffling addition to the Windows tablet PC range

Fujitsu Stylistic Q550 Slate PC

The screen's anti-gloss coating worked well at removing glare

This tablet computer runs Windows 7 and is aimed mainly at business users, but it is an interesting example of the technology.

The 10in screen has an anti-gloss coating, which worked well at removing the glare we normally see on tablets with ‘shiny' screens, and screen quality in general was good, but it was let down by being unresponsive. It works with either a finger or a stylus.

The supplied stylus can be attached to the tablet using a piece of black string (included), but there is nowhere to store it, so it just dangled from the side when not in use.

Fujitsu has customised the installed Windows 7 Professional operating system with its own Infinity Lounge software, accessed through a small icon. It collates several widget-like applications such as a calendar, calculator and sticky notes but we found it slow and unresponsive.

Manufacturers keep making tablet PCs with Windows 7 on them, but Windows 7 just doesn't work well on a device of this size.

In keeping with the business feel, the operating system does mean the Q550 is good for working with Word documents and Excel spreadsheets but it really is hampered by its slow Intel Atom Z670 processor and 2GB of memory.

It looked good but was heavy at 860g (the iPad 2 weighs just over 600g) – it wasn't easy to keep holding it for long periods.

Around the screen edge are awkwardly positioned buttons for rotating the display, showing the on-screen keyboard and locking the device.

On the sides are an on-off switch for the wireless network connection (a more expensive version also connects to mobile networks), there is an HDMI socket, a USB port, an SD memory card slot, a fingerprint scanner and two cameras - one on the front and one on the back.

We found the Fujitsu Stylistic Q550 woefully under-qualified in terms of speed and specification. While we appreciate that it tablet is aimed mostly at business users, but we would expect a more fluid, impressive and smooth user experience than it delivered, whether we were using it for work or leisure.
