The small 80x75mm adapter needs only mains power and a HDMI port to connect to your TV

The HP Wireless TV Connect is a handy gadget that lets you stream videos from a laptop or PC to your TV.

The small 80x75mm adapter needs only mains power and a HDMI port to connect to your TV. Once that is done there will be a ‘linking’ message on your TV (or monitor or projector).

The corresponding PC adapter needs to be plugged into your computer’s HDMI port, as well as a USB port for power. Then hold down the power button on the PC adapter. Once a blue light begins to blink, you can commence streaming.

HP says additional drivers may need to be installed, but our experience was plug-and-play. We set up in two minutes, and had a laptop streaming a full 1080p HD movie trailer to a 40in TV. There is no Wifi to deal with, no router required, and no frustration.

Anything you do on your computer can be streamed to a TV, with the adapters carrying both video to your chosen screen and audio to any connected speakers. Not only does this make the Wireless TV Connect fantastic for watching TV shows and films, it also means you can stream music, YouTube clips, slideshows, presentations or even just browse the web on your TV. It’s even possible to stream Blu-ray movies if your computer has a Blu-ray drive and playback software.

The range is impressive. No maximum distance is given by HP but, in our tests, we could stream full HD trailers from a laptop in a room one floor below the target screen without interruption. There were no problems with video quality either, such as the audio falling out of sync with the picture, which can plague some other video-streaming products.

Our only quibble is the price. At £142, it is not cheap. Still, it is a highly effective and simple video-streaming device that is well worth considering.
