We explore Okozo, a program that will let you download new wallpapers for your Desktop in Windows 7 and Vista, quickly, easily and free
Go to the Okozo homepage and click the Download link at the top and then at the next screen click Download Now. This opens a new page – again, click Download Now and, if your browser flashes a warning at you, left-click on it and choose Download File. If the File Download Security Warning dialogue box appears, click Save and then choose a location for the downloaded file. Firefox users should select Save File to save the download to Firefox’s default download folder.
Now find and double-click the ‘Okozo_Installer.exe’ file just downloaded. Ignore any security warnings and click Run. The program will now have a sniff round your PC to see if there are any additional components it needs to install to continue – just click the Accept button. When the installation wizard itself appears, accept the licence agreement and follow the installation through to the end. When it has finished you will see a new Windows Desktop like this. A message will also pop up in the Notification Area, hinting that new wallpapers are available to download.
Now double-click the new Okozo icon in the Notification Area: this launches Okozo Desktop manager, which will display a thumbnail of the current Desktop. To download a replacement background, click the Wallpapers link at the top – this will open the appropriate download section of the Okozo website. Explore this to find an animation you like, then click the Download here link and follow the instructions to get the animated background. We have chosen one called Fish Wallpaper.
The wallpapers are quite small and should take just a few seconds to download. When the download is complete, find the file and double-click to install it. An installation-confirmation message will appear – click OK to close the dialogue box. Switch back to Okozo Desktop (which should still be running) and click the Reload menu. After a moment, the newly installed wallpaper will appear as a thumbnail along the bottom of the program window. Click once to select it and then click the Apply menu.
And here’s the result. Five animated fish that will follow the mouse pointer around the screen as you go about your business. They won’t interfere with your work at all and you shouldn’t notice any reduction in performance either. If you’re feeling generous, double-click an empty part of the Desktop to drop fish food onto the Desktop for them to eat.
To find more wallpapers that appeal to you, just repeat Steps 3 to 5. Here, for instance, we have downloaded another two wallpapers: an animated clock with a cartoon sun that moves across the Desktop during the day; and one called Magic Lights that adds an attractive moving lightshow. To return to the traditional static Desktop, right-click the Okozo icon in the Notification Area and choose Shutdown.
