Ableton Live is designed for creating audio tracks and performances. It can use audio recorded from instruments and sounds from its own samples and synthesisers.
The interface looks different from most Windows programs but it doesn't take long to get used to. Most tasks are possible without opening extra windows, which keeps the screen clear. This also means that options stay in the same place, making it faster to get to grips with.
As the name suggests Live is also designed to be used live in concerts. It can play different sections as and when they are required, so a track can last as long as you want. This also makes it a useful tool for practising ideas and improvisations.
