PC help: Can I protect my USB key with a password?

Make data on a USB key safe

Written by Tim Smith, Computeract!ve

Q Is it possible to install a password on my USB memory key so that it can’t be accessed by anyone else?

I know that the USB port on a computer can be disabled, but that’s not going to protect the information from being transferred to another PC. Is there a way to protect the actual data on the key?
John Kavanagh

A Some memory keys (such as those from Sandisk and Freecom) come with tools to scramble the data on the key so it can’t be accessed without entering a password.

If you’re really concerned about security, Sandisk, Sony and Memory Experts all make USB storage devices with fingerprint readers, which will not allow access to the data without the correct finger being present.

There are several paid-for programs, such as Steganos Safe, that can password-protect data. A free alternative is Truecrypt, although this might be more suited to intermediate and advanced users.
