Social-networking websites take many of the features and services you can find elsewhere on the internet – making friends, blogging, instant messaging, storing photos and dating – and put them all in the same place. As a result, they’ve become hugely popular.

The Bebo website reckons it registered 22 million members in just over a year, while Myspace claims around 60 million users online. Elsewhere, sites like MSN Spaces, Friendster, Facebook and Yahoo 360 are all busy connecting online communities.

Typically, these sites let members create their own web pages complete with interests, favourite books, films, people and so on. After that, you can search for like-minded members all over the world and invite them to join your virtual circle of friends.

Here’s how to get involved in an online community.
