PC help: Windows media player help

Q I recently purchased an mp3 player using a 512MB SD memory card. I use Windows Media Player to copy tracks from the computer. Although it shows that tracks have been copied, when I try to use the mp3 player it says there is no music.

A Unless told otherwise, Windows Media Player will always use the Windows Media Audio (WMA) format for copying music. This includes Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology that prevents music from being copied. Not all portable media players can play WMA files, even though Windows Media Player can copy the files to them.

If the music files do not have DRM applied to them it is possible to convert them to mp3. Download and install Cheetah Audio Converter.

To make sure that all future CDs are copied in the mp3 format, start Windows Media Player, right-click on the title bar, open the Tools menu and select Options. Left-click on the Rip Music tab and click on the drop-down arrow in the Format menu in the Rip settings section. Click on the mp3 option and click on Apply.

It is also possible to change the quality settings for the music using the slider. The further to the right you move the slider, the better the quality of music, but this will take up more space on the hard disk. Click on OK to save the changes and close the Options window.
