Crosswords are notoriously difficult to construct and typically require piles
of paper, a dictionary, a thesaurus and lots of heavy eraser action.
There are various commercial crossword-making programs that enthusiasts can
buy to make the job easier, but they’re a bit expensive for occasional use.
There is a free alternative. It’s called Eclipsecrossword and – although
brilliantly simple to use – it is able to produce a wide variety of crossword
puzzles.
These can be printed out for puzzlers to complete by hand the old-fashioned
way or better still, turned into interactive web pages so that visitors can fill
in the answers on their own screens using the mouse and keyboard. In this
Workshop we’ll demonstrate how to create a crossword that takes about 10 minutes
to compile and looks exactly like the real thing.
