PC help: DVD drive compatibility

Will drive from PC work in Mac?

Q I use an LG DVD writer in my PC, which can read and write DVD-Ram discs. Later this month I will be switching camps and getting an Apple iMac.

Will I be able to take the DVD writer out of the PC, and turn it into an external drive to connect via USB to the iMac?
Philip Hemingway

A You certainly can remove the DVD writer and place it in an external case. Cases are available with both USB and Firewire connections, so pick one depending on the connections available on the Mac.

Most drives will be compatible with the Mac, although occasionally some drives have problems. Check the database at XLR8 Your Mac for reports of compatible drives – select LG from the list of manufacturers and click Search.

The list isn’t comprehensive, so if your drive doesn’t appear, that doesn’t mean it won’t work. Once you have the kit, installing it should be relatively easy, and the Mac will recognise it once it’s plugged in. To find a kit, try a internet search for ‘usb dvd housing’. The Lindy housing offers both USB and Firewire and should work well with Macs. However, it costs £60, and unbranded kits are available for much less. n
