Make a full recovery

Don’t be left without a leg to stand on should your computer go wrong. Prepare for the worst with your best defence – a recovery CD

When computer problems arise, after the initial feeling of panic has subsided, the next stage is to start thinking about what tools are needed to get things sorted out.

Preparation is the key and in this feature we’ll show you how to create a recovery disc packed with all the tools needed to fix a variety of problems.

Should something go wrong with your computer, you can feel safe in the knowledge that you have a CD or DVD that contains everything you need to get your computer back to full working order.

You can create this CD without spending a pile of money. All you need is a blank CD, a computer with a CD burner and a broadband connection.

Before we begin, it’s worth taking a quick look at the process of burning a CD or DVD. If this has you thoroughly confused, take a look at our practical guide to creating discs, which can be found here.

Alternatively, copy the files to a USB key with plenty of memory. A 4GB key costs about £30.

Depending on the nature of the problem afflicting your PC, it may not be possible to start Windows in the usual way. This can make it impossible to run some of the standard tools built into Windows to help diagnose and fix problems.

If booting into Windows is possible, creating a recovery CD ensures that a collection of useful tools and utilities is available in one place. If Windows is not accessible, it should still be possible to boot into Safe Mode and the same tools can be accessed from the CD.

Safe Mode launches Windows in a cut-down state, loading only files needed to get the computer running and usable. To access Safe Mode, switch on your computer and press the F8 key before the Windows logo appears.

From the menu that is displayed, Safe Mode can be selected using the keyboard.
