Apple’s iTunes application has become a favourite among PC users, not least
because it seamlessly works with the iPod music player and iTunes online store.
However, managing a big library of iTunes music can be more complicated than
it might appear at first especially if you need to move the library and all
its playlists, star ratings and so on from one PC to another, or from one hard
disk to another.
In this Workshop we’ll explain how to copy not just the songs but also the
important index files from one location to another. You can then reset iTunes so
that it finds your music again, along with your ratings and playlists.
Note that this Workshop explains how to move an iTunes library. This may
include files and folders that are subject to digital-rights management (DRM)
measures. The iTunes Music Store, which sells protected music, permits buyers to
move purchased music up to five times. You might for example wish to keep a
duplicate of your music library on a desktop and notebook PC, or move it to a
new PC. But if this five-copy limit is exceeded, purchased music will no longer
play back, so follow this Workshop only when necessary. You should not use this
method to illegally share music.
