PC help: Noisy modem

Q I have a dial-up connection and whenever I go online I have to listen to the beeping of the modem dialling the number, followed by the crashing and screeching sounds. Am I stuck with this noise, or is there a way to turn it off?

A The simplest solution is to adjust the modem volume in the Sound Mixer. The slider is not always shown.

In this case, click on the Start button and then on Control Panel. Click on Sounds, select Speech and Audio Devices and then on Adjust the system volume. Click on the Advanced button to see the different volume properties. If the modem is shown, simply click in the box labelled Mute.

The slider for the modem may not be shown, in which case, click on the Options menu and select Properties. Make sure Playback is selected in the top section and then click in the box marked Phone or Modem. Click on OK and the slider will now be shown with the mute option. When the sliders are set correctly, click on the cross in the top-right corner.
