Q I use Windows XP on my computer, along with Outlook Express for my email. I have a broadband connection, so I leave the computer running during the day.
Is there a way to get Outlook Express to notify me when a new message arrives
in my inbox, because otherwise I have to keep going back to the computer to
check whether anything new has arrived.

A As long as Outlook Express has been set to check regularly for new emails (click the Tools menu, then Options, then in the General tab tick the box marked ‘Check for new messages every’ and fill in a number of minutes, then click OK), it will display an icon in the Notification Area.
Of course, this is only useful when you’re working at the PC. In the same dialogue box as above (Tools, Options, General) there is another tick box marked ‘Play sound when new messages arrive’. Make sure this is ticked and then Outlook Express will play a sound as well as displaying the icon. You will need to have speakers or an amplifier plugged into the computer and switched on.
To change the sound, open the Sounds and Audio Devices Control Panel, click the Sounds taband scroll down until you see New Mail Notification. Click it, then select a sound from the drop-down list below. You can click the Play button next to it to hear a preview. Click OK to confirm the change.
