By default, the power button in Windows Vista’s Start menu does not switch
off the computer, but places it into a power-saving mode.
To shut down the computer in the usual way, open the Control Panel and launch
Power Options. Click the ‘Change plan settings’ beneath the selected power plan
and click ‘Change advanced power settings’.
In the options, expand the ‘Power buttons and lid’ entry and expand ‘Start
menu power button’. From the dropdown menu, select the ‘Shut down’ option and
then click OK.
