PC help: Making a bigger map

Magnify text characters inserted into documents

Q I frequently use the character map in Word to insert text characters into documents, especially for non-English scripts.

I find the letters in the grid for some fonts too small to read easily. Is there any way of magnifying these?
John Herbert

A Presumably you are using the Insert Symbol function in Word. While this is a useful tool, there is a similar, more powerful version of it included in the main Windows operating system, called the Character Map. To get to it, click Start, then Run, then type charmap and press Enter.

When the dialogue box appears, select the font being used in Word from the dropdown list at the top. When you then click on one of the symbols beneath (scroll down for more) it will show a magnified version.

Double-click a symbol to add it to the box at the bottom, and when you have added all the text to insert, click Copy. Then go back to Word and click the Edit menu and select Paste (or hold down Ctrl on the keyboard and press V).
