Q My computer seems to display websites badly - most
programs work fine, without any problems, but I have tried to use both
Internet
Explorer and
Firefox,
and in both, several aspects of most pages seem to be missing.
Some sites display only in black and white, with text and graphics bigger
than they should be, and on certain sites, the text is so big that it almost
goes off the screen.
I can use the options in the menus in Internet Explorer to get it back down
to something like the normal size, but it’s still pretty big. Is there a way to
fix this, or do I have to go through the whole process of reinstalling Windows?

A It sounds like somebody has accidentally switched on the
High Contrast mode. This is a feature of Windows that optimises the screen for
people with visual problems or who are using poor quality displays such as old
television sets.
For anyone with good sight and using a decent screen, it can be very
annoying. To switch it off, open the Control Panel and select the Accessibility
Options control panel. Click the Display tab and remove the tick from the box
marked Use High Contrast, then click OK. Follow any prompts that appear on
screen.
