How to transfer files from an old computer to a new one

Q How can I transfer files and folders (in a nutshell, all the information on my old computer), to my new computer?

Paul Harvey

A If your new computer runs Windows Vista, the easiest way might be to use the Windows Easy Transfer software, which is supplied with Vista. This will make an automatic transfer using your home network or an external hard disk.

You can also buy a Windows Easy Transfer cable (we reviewed Vivanco’s cable recently), which works with the same software.

If both computers run Windows XP, the equivalent program is called the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard, and it’s found in the Start menu under All Programs, Accessories, System Tools. Note that neither will transfer programs, only documents and settings, so you’ll need to reinstall any programs as necessary.
