PC Help: Moving pictures from a Mac to a PC

How to move large numbers of digital photos between computers

Q My daughter has an Apple Mac computer and I recently bought a PC with Windows XP.

She has over 300 pictures on the Mac in the iPhoto format.

Is there any way she can transfer the pictures from the Mac to the PC to view them?

Mike Stewart

A iPhoto isn’t a format, it’s a program for storing and managing pictures, but it doesn’t have its own file format.

So the pictures will still be in their original format, from when they were copied to the Mac. They can be found on the Mac in the Pictures folder, under the iPhoto Library sub-folder.

To copy them, you’ll need a USB memory key (you can do it using a CD but a USB key will be much easier and quicker). Insert the key into the Mac’s USB port and an icon will appear on the Desktop.

Now open the pictures folder as described above and select all the images you want to copy. Drag and drop them on to the USB key’s icon – that is, left-click on one of them so they’re still all selected, and while still holding the mouse button down, move it over to the USB key icon on the Desktop and let go. When they’ve finished copying, drag the USB key icon to the Trashcan to prepare it to be safely removed.

When that’s done, remove the key from the USB socket and plug it into the PC’s USB socket. The PC will recognise the files on the key and ask what you want to do with them – you should be able to select an option to view the files, or you can copy them to the PC.
