Fans of the popular Sharp GX20 will instantly recognise the new GX30. But while its appearance may not have changed too much, there are some important enhancements to be found.

First and foremost is the 1-megapixel digital camera. With a range of features, including flash, various exposure levels and adjustable shutter speeds, the GX30 is capable of taking some of the best shots we've ever seen from a mobile. It can even take small video clips, suitable for emailing or playing back on the phone itself.

There are also more familiar features such as polyphonic ringtones, MP3 playback and access to the Vodafone Live! Service. Navigation around the various menus is pretty easy but compared to some of the other phones on offer at the moment, the menu system looks a little dull.

Despite its obvious selling points, there are problems with the GX30. The Bluetooth feature only allows you to connect to headsets and car kits, while the infrared option doesn't let you transfer data between two phones. Furthermore, the calendar function is far too basic and you can't even set alarms for any of the entries you make.

However, this phone is tri-band, which means you'll be able to use the GX30 in the US and most of Europe.

The SD/MMC memory card slot lets you quickly transfer photos from your phone to a PC - providing you have an appropriate card reader - and you get an 8Mb card to start you off.

We found the battery life to be long lasting, although constant use of the camera and flash will require a regular trip to the mains socket.

If you want a phone that can take decent photos, this is the best you'll get at the moment. However, it's certainly not perfect.
