Verdict:

The sound isn't amazing but it's the easiest way to get sound from a computer

The easiest way to improve sound from a notebook computer or get audio from a sound card-less PC is to use USB-powered speakers. The Philips DGX220 set contains an integrated plug-and-play sound card, which means all you have to do is plug them into a USB port for them to work.

They operate without the need for driver installation, but they are supplied with the excellent SoundAgent 2 software that provides you with a simple menu system to change the speaker settings.

The DGX220s also benefit from being magnetically shielded, which means they won't interfere with a TV or monitor picture. This is a feature not usually found on budget speakers. Mounted on the side of the speakers are convenient microphone and headphone sockets.

Sound quality isn't fantastic but this is largely down to the cheap plastic enclosures, and they sound great through headphones.
