HP is well known for its iPaq range of handheld computers, but this is the company's first phone, and as such, it's a smartphone.

It runs the Windows Mobile operating system, so the display and usability are very similar to the Orange SPV line of phones, which use the same software.

The phone uses the new Windows Mobile 6, which adds a couple of clever touches, such as being able to search through a folder of text messages easily using the keypad.

The 514's camera is only a 1.3-megapixel model, which is an indication of where the phone's priorities are.

Although it can play music, the focus is very much on calling and messaging. The internet browser is useable but slow (the phone only works with GPRS, not 3G). It can pick up Pop and Imap email messages easily and quickly (although with both of these, it's necessary to make sure your talk plan includes a suitable amount of data use).

Call quality is good, and the phone is generally very easy to use. Unlike some of the SPVs, the plastic case isn't easily damaged, although it sustained a little light scratching in general use. As a phone, it's fast, easy to use, and, being a smartphone, can be equipped with all sorts of extra programs.

The one problem is that HP hasn't signed up any deals with UK networks, which means you'll have to pay full price for the iPaq 514 Voice Messenger, rather than, say, getting it cheaply with a contract.
