No frills on this big monitor

Verdict:

Overall It doesn’t look very inspiring, but it's a great price for a large screen.

Like most of Hannspree's cheaper HannsG range of monitors, the HW223DP has an old-fashioned boxy look to it.

Unless the screen's looks are a real sticking point, though, don't let that put you off, because it makes up in screen size and quality what it lacks in design elegance.

The wide 22in screen is bright and sharp, and although colours appear a bit muted, it's not something we'd be worried about, and contrast is good nonetheless.

This display can be connected to a computer using either DVI or VGA ports, and it supports HDCP so it can be used for watching high-definition movies as well. There is also a sound input that goes through to the built-in speakers, which are fairly loud and clear.

In a useful touch, the monitor includes something that's usually only found on screens intended for offices - a four-port USB hub, which increases the connection options from the computer. Between the screen quality and the connection options, this monitor represents excellent value, given how cheaply it's available, and that makes it worth overlooking the product's outdated design.
