Channel
4 Radio is a new radio service with news, music, sport and programmes to
accompany popular shows such as
Lost
and
Big
Brother.
The radio station is broadcast purely online for the moment, although there
may be a DAB digital radio station coming soon. Shows are arranged on the
website by category and there is no live broadcast.
Registration is required to browse and mark programmes for download. These
downloads are in either MP3 or WMA format. The latter is used to enforce
digital
rights management on some programmes.
This means that these shows cannot be played on an iPod, but Channel 4 radio
claims that any protected content will be clearly marked.
Most of the content will be available at no cost but there will be links to
premium content such as audio books featured on the
Richard
and Judy Book Club.
Regular shows have their own RSS feed so new editions can be downloaded
automatically using a compatible RSS reader.
There are plans to make a bid to Ofcom later in the year for a radio
frequency that may lead to as many as eight Channel 4 radio stations by 2008.
