Vulnerabilities in Windows drivers used by some models of Intel's Centrino wireless notebooks can be used by hackers to gain control of notebook PCs.
The flaw affects the Intel 2200BG and 2915ABG PRO/Wireless Network Connection Hardware.
The company has issued generic updates and a statement about the problem, which theoretically allows hackers to spread malicious code, including worms, wirelessly between notebooks. laptops.
However although the updates reportedly fix the issue, the company is alsorecommending that users contact their notebook manufacturers for vendor-specific information and fixes.
Although so far it and Intel hasn't detected any attacks exploiting this vulnerability, security company Sophos has also advised these computer users to ensure they are running the latest security patches.
"A hacker could exploit these wireless vulnerabilities to run malicious code on an innocent user's laptop, giving them control over other people's PCs or spreading a wireless worm which could leapfrog from one laptop to the next," said Graham Cluley, Sophos' senior technology consultant.
Intel has published more information about the security holes, and information on which hardware is affected, on its website as well as the software download which resolves this vulnerability.
THe company has also provided more advice and support for those who are unsure if their PC is affected.
