Electronics giant plans first blow in the new Skype battleground

Philips is launching the first Skype-enabled VoIP phone that can be used without a computer in November.

The Philips VOIP841, which is also Dect enabled, can make and receive normal telephone calls, as well as those using Skype and SkypeOut. It costs €199 (approx £134) and contacts are viewed on the handset's 65k screen.

The phone's base station – about the size of a wallet - will connect directly to a router via Ethernet. The VoIP/Dect handset is wireless.

Although Philips is claiming a first, both Netgear and US Robotics have mooted similar devices that allow users to make Sype calls without a PC, which will help push the service more mainstream.

Philips is also bringing out a Windows Live Messenger VoIP phone in November, called VOIP433 and costing €99 (£66). It however, will need a PC to be switched on to make calls.
