An increasing number of consumers are turning to handheld gadgets to get news
and other video content, according to Wifi and network operator The Cloud.
The
company, which has recently formed a partnership with
4Radio
to offer podcasts and Celebrity Big Brother updates via
Sony
PlayStation Portable (PSP) consoles connected to wireless hotspots, said
people no longer wanted to rely on TVs to get news and views.
"With so many portable media players in the market people are seeking
different ways of watching and listening to media,” said Niall Murphy, The
Cloud's chief technology officer.
"Part of the future of broadcasting is seeing lots of content being streamed
in many different ways including video over the internet, podcasts over digital
radio and now, wirelessly through games consoles, all of which will play a key
role in making watching TV on the move easy."
All the user has to do is find a Cloud hotspot - there are over 7,500 found
in coffee shops, airports, hotels, and train stations throughout the country -
load up the PSP browser, and they will automatically be redirected to the 4Radio
homepage.
Programmes designed specifically for PSP owners include morning news, content
from Slash Music and Celebrity Big Brother updates. The content will be free for
two months and consumers can only access 4Radio content. Viewing other web pages
will incur normal £11.99 per month The Cloud charges.
Pricing for access to 4Radio after the two months is still to be sorted out
according to The Cloud.
