Tom Tom launches intelligent sat-nav device

The gadget calculates routes based on average, not maximum, speeds

Written by Andrea-Marie Vassou, Computeract!ve

Tom Tom has announced a sat-nav device that uses a new way of calculating routes.

The Tom Tom Go 930T uses a new technique called IQ Routes to calculate the fastest route between two locations. It calculates a route based on average speeds for each road rather than using speed limits for each road type.

Harold Goddijn, chief executive officer at Tom Tom, explained: “Everyone knows that traffic on a Sunday is different from traffic on a Monday. IQ Routes delivers what we call ‘intelligent routing’ – an even smarter and more efficient way to plan your daily route.”

The Go 930T also includes a feature called Advanced Lane Guidance. This is said to give drivers a more realistic view of the road and make it clearer which lane they need to move into in order to safely negotiate roundabouts or exit a motorway.

The device has a 4.3in touchscreen and a traffic information receiver, and includes maps of 35 European countries as well as the US and Canada. It will be available from late April and its price has yet to be announced.
