BBC TV channels go live online

BBC1 and BBC2 to be available live on the iPlayer as part of trial

Written by Tom Royal, Computeractive

The BBC has announced that its two main TV channels will be available to watch live online from Thursday 27 November.

BBC One and BBC Two will be available to view live online via the BBC website as well as the broadcaster's iPlayer service. Other BBC TV channels, including BBC Three, Four, News and the childrens' services CBBC and CBeebies, are already available live online.

The streaming TV services will be geographically restricted so that they are only available to internet users within the UK. They will also be available to users with compatible mobile phones and other portable devices.

The BBC's Jana Bennett said: "The launch of BBC One and BBC Two online completes our commitment to make our portfolio of channels available to watch on the internet.

"From 27 November licence fee-payers will be able to watch BBC programmes, live, wherever they are in the UK."

However, the Corporation noted that the live online service might not be made permanently available. It says the "simulcasting" is "being launched as part of a 12-month evaluation period".
