Now you might not have wished to take to the waters since you were a kid in an oversized skipper’s hat, but Ship Simulator by Lighthouse Interactive is one title that should not be overlooked despite its less than enthralling premise.

With a massive range of boats that power and steer differently, it’s extremely comprehensive, and it looks fantastic with great water effects and vessels.

It really is enjoyable, especially when weather changes and your boat is left rocking like Italy defenders whenever Zinidene Zidane is around. Suddenly a peaceful cruise can turn into a hugely entertaining survival effort.

The missions are as thrilling on paper as you might expect - carry passengers, rescue stranded vessels ­- but they offer a sedate and addictive charm in a similar fashion to the excellent Train Simulator.

This isn’t just a title for experienced sailors or boat bores: it’s a fantastic alternative gaming experience.
