Verdict:

Overall: Even the light-hearted of gamers should have Total War: Eras in their collection

Before you get too excited, we should point out that this isn’t a new Total War title.

It is in fact a compendium of all the titles released so far – the at-the-time revolutionary Shogun, the excellent Medieval and the simply inspiring Rome - with all expansion packs included for good measure.

If that isn’t enough, you also get an extra DVD and some reading material, which are unlikely to be watched or read much, but it’s a nice touch nonetheless. And all for the price of an (albeit pricey) single title - what is there to possibly complain about?

Well, nothing. For these are genre-defining offerings that still play superbly today. While you’re probably unlikely to delve much into Shogun, it’s still initially fun to return to, although you’ll still be tempted to use the well-known cheat method that allows you to defeat armies with a single warrior.

Medieval is better than Shogun, especially with the add-ons, but it was with Rome that the series really defined itself. Still one of the finest strategy titles ever released, it plays superbly, looks fantastic and is wonderful to revisit.

If you’ve got Rome and its expansion packs then Total War: Eras this is more of a collector’s piece than an essential purchase, but for everyone else this is a truly worthy addition to your software collection.
