Zonealarm originally made a name for itself through its free firewall
software, but has since expanded its range to include a complete internet
security package that includes virus protection and more.
The latest version of its most comprehensive package is Internet Security
2009, which builds on previous efforts by offering a revised interface and a new
one-click Fix-it option.
The interface redesign was actually a little overdue but we’re pleased with
the tidy new approach, which offers instant information on system security
status along with the aforementioned single click to solve problems. You’ll also
find useful additional information on this main page, including details about
the latest threats and a system check to make sure you’re sufficiently
protected.
Behind this new layout is a similar approach to tool configuration with which
existing users will be familiar. For most of the program's sections this
consists of a design based on using sliders that allow the user to make quick
adjustments to security levels along with more detailed settings for
fine-tuning.
This effectively splits the tools up into beginner and advanced views. While
this is effective enough, we’d have liked to see some improvements here, perhaps
in the form of step-by-step wizards to simplify more complex tasks.
Regardless, Zonealarm’s appeal in the past has come from the effectiveness of
its firewall, and the fact that it can now combine this with excellent virus
protection means that it’s one of the most formidable security suites on the
market. Hourly updates keep the software bang up to date and if it’s peace of
mind you’re after, there are few rivals out there that can offer this to a
comparable extent.
Zonealarm does lack some useful extra features however. It omits tools such
as an anti-phishing component, for which it points users towards the company's
Forcefield application, which costs extra. It has also neglected to provide the
backup or system tune-up tools that are becoming more common in programs such as
this.
Despite these drawbacks Zonealarm is still an effective no-nonsense package
that beginners will be happy to set and forget and that will leave experienced
users feeling safe in the knowledge that they’re protected by some of the most
impressive security expertise on the market. The price includes a year's cover
for three home computers.
