The LaserJet 4100mfp is HP's top-of-the-range internet-enabled network appliance. It incorporates a colour scanner, monochrome printer and digital sender into a compact, easily managed unit with a footprint that's the same as a small printer.

It's aimed at high-volume corporate users and has a price tag to match. The 4100mfp has a parallel interface, but the preferred connection is via the built-in HP JetDirect 615n print server's 10/100Base-T socket.

Installation is simple and setting up the 4100mfp consists mainly of choosing an IP address and letting the device search the network for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol email gateways. The addresses for these can be entered manually if the 4100mfp fails to locate a gateway.

Managing the 4100mfp can be accomplished via the built-in web server, which can also be set up to send email alerts for low toner, paper jams and so on.

The 4100mfp's front panel has controls for the scanner/copier, a keyboard, an LCD and a set of navigation buttons. Copy and scan originals can be placed on the 4100mfp's flat bed manually or on the 30-sheet automatic document feeder. The scanner has a resolution of 600 by 600dpi.

Scans can be sent to a PC, printer or a selection of email addresses. Scanned documents are converted to PDFs, JPEGs or TIFFs and sent as attachments.

The 4100mfp's monochrome printer has a resolution of 1,200 by 1,200dpi and a claimed speed of 24 pages per minute (ppm). In all modes, text output quality is great and the 4100mfp's duty cycle of 150,000ppm means it's suitable for heavy use.

There are two paper trays: one with a 500-sheet capacity (A4, A5, B5, executive, letter and legal); and one for envelopes.

Price: £2,588 (ex. VAT).
