Dell launches mini-laptop

£299 Inspiron Mini 9 powered by 1.6GHz Atom

Dell has finally unveiled its long-expected mini-laptop. The 1.6GHz Atom-powered Inspiron Mini 9 weighs 1.035kg and comes with a solid-state hard drive of up to 16GB.

It runs Windows XP Home edition, and has 1GB of 533MHz DDR2 memory. Prices start at £299 inc Vat and delivery.

Versions using Ubuntu 8.04 Linux, with a customised home screen, are expected to be available within a few weeks for £269 ex Vat.

Wifi is described as an "optional" 802.11g mini-card on the Dell site but we are assured that it is included in the bundle as standard. So does Bluetooth.

Dell is taking orders now and the machines are expected to be available by the end of the month.
