AMD to produce memory-light X2 processors

Half the L2 cache, but lower street prices for CPUs

AMD plans to introduce a cut-price AM2 Athlon 64 X2 processor to help it combat the threat posed by Intel's dual-core CPUs.

Taiwanese board makers are expecting a memory-slashed 2GHz Athlon 64 X2 chip in the final quarter of this year.

With just 256KB of Level 2 (L2) cache per core, compared with the 512KB of its elder brother, the new 3600+ is expected to be priced between $140 and $160, according to the Inquirer.

The pricing can be nothing more than a guess by manufacturers though. AMD is likely to wait until Intel’s price plans for Conroe are better known. It is expected to slash the planned cost of its new processors before they even launch.
