Oil encased consumer PCs to follow
PCW has learnt that Very-PC will start selling oil submerged servers within 12 months time.
The Sheffield based PC manufacturer claims to own UK patents to the technology which will give it a foothold in the server market.
Speaking to PCW, managing director of Very-PC Peter Hopton said development was underway and consumer PCs will follow.
Hopton claimed the process was ideal for rack servers, since processors can be packed more densely than in air cooled machines.
Home enthusiasts have experimented with oil submerged PCs for years to varying degrees of success. Previous attempts have placed hardware into a water-tight container and let electrical components come into contact with mineral or vegetable oil instead of air.
The oil coolant, combined with pumps, acts as a large heatsink that transfers heat away from critical components.
